Holy Roman Empire, 1688 (September 2), Burghaslach, Franconia,
folded official correspondence with red wax armorial seal, written
in chancery-style German with flowing calligraphic script and local
officials’ signatures, the address panel showing contemporary
manuscript accounting figures and a circular 3 possibly
representing a due fee, the reverse retaining a well-preserved red
wax seal applied over the wrapper and showing clear armorial detail
, Burghaslach at this time forming part of the Franconian Imperial
Circle on the important route linking Nuremberg and Würzburg, the
letter produced at the outset of the Nine Years’ War (1688–1697)
when the Empire entered the Grand Alliance against Louis XIV, a
lovely and fresh letter, very fine.
