1833 (September 9), illustrated maritime Bill of Lading (Polizza di
Carico) for cargo shipped from Alexandria to Livorno, Italy, fine
vignette of a sailing vessel at upper left, headed "ALESSANDRIA
D'EGITTO," detailing shipment of 31 bales of textiles (24 linen, 7
cloth) aboard the Austrian brigantine Urmeny under Captain Edoardo
Medanich, cargo shipped by Stach Felice and consigned to G. Vennino
in Livorno, signed by Captain Medanich at lower right, original
horizontal and vertical mailing folds, most attractive. The Urmeny
was a merchant brigantine of the Illyrian fleet named for the
prominent Hungarian Ürményi noble family; Captain Medanich belonged
to a distinguished seafaring family from Fiume (modern Rijeka)
active in the Levant trade. Livorno was at the time a crucial Free
Port and primary gateway for Egyptian textiles entering the Italian
states.
