1943 & 1945, pair of covers documenting the three-year Japanese captivity of Robert Carl Miller, Bataan Death March survivor, the first a censored cover from San Diego (21 Jun 1943) addressed to Miller at Tokyo with "Interned in the Philippine Islands" notation, bearing USA and Japanese censor markings and P.O.W. handstamps, the War Bond slogan of the American machine cancel physically removed by a Japanese censor, an example of a rare "propaganda scrub"; the second a pre-printed P.O.W. aerogram from his wife in New York (14 Jul 1945), lacking Japanese markings and returned to sender in the final weeks of the war, fine-very fine for such POW mail. Miller was captured at the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942, survived the 65-mile forced march, and was transferred by Hellship to the Japanese home islands for forced labour. The 1943 cover confirms his early arrival in Japan; the 1945 aerogram, mailed weeks before the atomic bombings and the Japanese surrender, never reached him.
