1861 (April 30), Corfu to 13 Rue d'Enfer, Paris, France, stampless
blue cover, struck with black circular Corfu (30 Apr 61) dispatch,
sloping red "A." accountancy mark at the Sardinian/Austrian
frontier, and orange circular AUTRICHE / CULOZ (6 May 61) French
entry on front, manuscript "70" (centimes) fee, black circular
Paris (6 May 61) arrival on reverse, bottom back flap removed and
slight tape stain, fine-very fine. "Rue d'Enfer" ("Street of Hell")
is one of the oldest streets in Paris, dating to medieval times;
while the name is likely a corruption of the Latin "via inferior"
("lower road"), its proximity to the Paris Catacombs, whose
principal entrance is nearby, lends a certain colour to the
"hellish" association.
