/ No. 38 (22 Jun) c.d.s. with free strike at lower left, assigned
to SMS Gefion of the China Station, pictorial side by H. Sietas &
Co. with tinted view of the Chefoo coastline, fine-very fine.
Written by crew member "Fritz," the message is an eyewitness naval
report from the opening phase of the Rebellion, stating bluntly "we
have war" and recording casualties from the Taku Forts bombardment
five days earlier, with seven dead aboard SMS Iltis and her
commander Captain Lans wounded, his left leg shot off, further
noting the Gefion anchored at Chefoo only briefly before returning
to the fighting at Taku.
