1794 (June 26), Quebec Bishop mark on folded entire to Montreal,
with military content, rated "1N6", and struck on reverse with very
fine QUEBEC / CANADA double ring Bishop mark (26 IV), a lovely
strike, with Quebec being the only Canadian city to use such a
marking, central filing fold, else very fine and rare. The contents
of the letter offer further historical interest. While much
pertains to a debt between William Wickham of New York and a Major
Holland, the sender shares news of other current military
developments, noting "We are hourly waiting for the fleet from the
banks of Newfoundland...it looks like war, and we believe here that
the hostilities before this time have been commenced...." and that
they are "...out to watch for the fleet which sailed from
Chesapeake...they will be divided into squadrons of 6 or 7..."
