1945 (c. February/March), Lunghua Civil Assembley Centre, Shanghai,
China, prisoner of war cover via Victoria to Switzerland, addressed
from the Lunghua Civil Assembly Centre in Shanghai, China, franked
with 5c War Issue, cancelled with Victoria, B.C. blackout (7 Apr),
to the Red Cross in Geneva, Switzerland, scarce and very fine. The
Lunghua Civil Assembly Centre was established by the Japanese to
house Allied civilians who had been resident under Japanese
occupation since December 1941. Canadians interned at Lunghua
included missionaries, educators, and employees of international
firms or churches, many of whom had been active in China prior to
the war. Conditions were harsh: overcrowding, malnutrition, and
disease were common, and internees relied heavily on Red Cross
parcels.
