CALAIS entry mark on front (14 Mar) with same-day Paris arrival backstamp, back flap with imprint of the Principal Painter Ordinary, signed "G. Hayter" at lower left, light edge creases, scarce. Sir George Hayter (1792–1871), appointed Principal Painter Ordinary to Queen Victoria on the death of Sir David Wilkie and knighted in 1841, is best known for his historic and royal portraiture including the State Portrait of Queen Victoria and several scenes of the 1838 Coronation.
