1899 (December 31), Boer War, YMCA Headquarters, H.G. Barrie corner card, cover to Toronto, franked with Great Britain 1d lilac, tied by Field Post Office / British Army S.Africa c.d.s., printed "Headquarters / Young Men’s Christian Association / Canadian Contingent / On Active Service With British Forces / South Africa" with crossed-flags and "Dr. H.G. Barrie / Officer in Charge" corner card, endorsed in manuscript "Stamps not procurable," reverse with Toronto split-ring arrival backstamp (4 Feb), some light edge faults, else much fresher than usually seen for Canadian Contingent mail. In "The Postal History of the Canadian Contingents, Anglo-Boer War, 1899-1902", Boer notes this cover type as first reported in December 1899, making this an early example during its first month of use.
