Wye via England 30/4/98," franked with ½p strip of four and single and single 2p, tied by Freetown, Sierra Leone c.d.s., paying the 2½p letter rate plus 2p registration fee, red oval "Registered / Sierra Leone" datestamp, carried at the packet rate, arriving in England in 18 days against the usual 25–35 days by regular packet; oval "Registered / Liverpool" (17 May) transit, Toronto (26 May) and same-day Berlin, Ontario receiver backstamps, a beautiful cover with tremendous visual appeal, very fine.

The HMS Wye was an iron-hulled screw storeship that served as a vital logistical lifeline for the Royal Navy, ferrying supplies, personnel, and dispatches between England and West Africa. In April 1898, the ship was a frequent visitor to Sierra Leone, where it provided transport and communication links during the Hut Tax War, a violent uprising against British colonial taxation led by the Temne chief Bai Bureh.
