How it works

From first contact to final cheque

Consigning with Sparks International means placing your material with a specialist team that will describe it accurately, present it to a qualified international audience, and work to achieve the best possible result. The process is straightforward, and it begins with a simple conversation.

There is no obligation at any stage until you formally agree to consign. We are always happy to advise on whether auction is the right route for your material, and if so, which of our planned sales is best suited to it.

Timeline

From submission to realisation

1

Initial contact

Send us a description, photographs, or a list of what you have. Email, phone, or use the enquiry form below, whichever is easiest. We will reply promptly with a preliminary view and any questions.

2

Assessment & Estimates

We'll review what you've sent and come back to you with an honest assessment; whether your material is a good fit for our sales, how we'd propose to handle your collection.

3

Consignment Agreement

We set out our sale terms in writing for your review and signature, along with a provisional insurance valuation. Your material is insured in our care from the moment it arrives.

4

Cataloguing & Photography

Every lot is described by one of our specialists and illustrated to the standard serious buyers expect. The catalogue is published online in advance of the sale, with selected sales also available as a downloadable PDF.

5

The Auction

Your material is offered to our international bidder base - online, by telephone, and in person in Ottawa. Results are published on our website post- sale.

6

Settlement

We collect payment from buyers and settle with consignors according to the terms of our consignment agreement. Unsold lots are returned to you promptly or offered in our post-auction sales or at a future auction.

Estimates & Fees

What to expect financially

Estimates are set with reference to current market conditions and recent comparable results. The market determines the final price, and realisations may vary in either direction. Our commission rates are clearly outlined at the time of consignment; there are no surprises.

We will always be straightforward with you about what we believe material is likely to achieve.

What We Select

Material we welcome

Our sales include Canadian and worldwide stamps and postal history, historical documents (autograph letters, manuscripts, interesting ephemera), and specialist collections with depth and focus. Quality is our consistent measure, not price point. A carefully assembled collection of modest value is as welcome as a single high-value rarity, provided the material has something to recommend it. We don't offer everything that comes to us, and we think that matters - for consignors who want results, and for buyers who trust what they find in our sales.

Provenance counts. Items with a documented history are always welcome, and highly sought-after.

Expert certificates can add meaningful value and buyer confidence for the right material. We can advise on which lots would benefit from expertisation and assist in making the arrangements.

Condition matters above catalogue value. There is a place in our sales for quality material at a range of price points.

Outright Purchase

A direct, private transaction

If you would prefer not to wait for auction, or simply want a straightforward, private sale without the uncertainty of the bidding process, Sparks International buys material directly. We assess what you have, make you an offer, and if you accept, the transaction is complete. No waiting, no catalogue, no buyer dependency.

Direct purchase is often the right choice for estate situations where executors need a prompt and certain outcome, for collectors who value discretion, or for material where the auction process would not serve the best interests of the seller.

The Process

Simple and straightforward

1

Tell Us What You Have

A description and photographs by email is usually sufficient for an initial impression. For larger or more complex holdings, a visit to our Ottawa premises or a home visit may be appropriate; we are happy to discuss either.

2

We Make an Offer

Once we've reviewed your material, we'll make you an offer, or let you know honestly if it isn't the right fit for us.

3

You Decide

There is no pressure. If you accept, we proceed immediately. If you decline, there is no obligation.

4

Payment

Payment is made promptly upon our receipt of the material, either by bank transfer or cheque, whichever you prefer. For estate situations, we can work directly with executors and solicitors.

What We Buy

Categories of interest for outright purchase

We're always happy to consider a direct purchase offer on material of interest. Worldwide CLASSICS
